Climate

Like other New England states the climate of Vermont can be described as changeable, with a wide range of annual temperatures, great seasonal variations and considerable diversity from place to place.

Springfield is located in the southeastern part of the state, the mildest in Vermont, and generally enjoys warm summer days with highs in the 70s and 80s. Nights cool off to pleasant temperatures in the 60s or even upper 50s

Winter temperatures tend to vary more. Daytime temperatures are in the 30s or below in December, January and February with subzero days on occasion. Yearly snowfall averages 55-65 inches. Road crews are efficient and storms are quickly dealt with.

Spring brings renewal and temperatures of 40-50 degrees. Fall nights are cool, triggering a brilliant explosion of color in the maple trees.

Recreation

Outdoor recreation opportunities abound with two rivers, acres of forests and trails and Vermont's Green Mountains only a short drive away.

Hoyt's Landing at the junction of the Connecticut and Black Rivers is popular for boating, fishing, swimming, canoeing, kayaking and water skiing.

Nature enthusiasts will enjoy the North Springfield Bog, Springweather Nature Area, Hartness Park and Stoughton Pond. Several full service campgrounds are located in and around Springfield and during the summer months Lewis YMCA Day Camp provides daily activities for youth.

Forests and trails offer hiking, biking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Multiple athletic fields provide organized league play for youth and adults.

Outdoor ice rinks for recreational skating are maintained during the winter months at the Common and in North Springfield.

The Toonerville Trail a bicycle/pedestrian path runs along the Black River nearly four miles from lower Clinton Street to Hoyt's Landing on the Connecticut River.

Mountain ski resorts are only a short drive and include Ascutney Mountain, Okemo, Killington, Stratton, Bromley and Magic Mountain.

Golf enthusiasts can enjoy a championship 18-hole course at Crown Point Country Club right in Springfield with numerous other courses nearby.

Health Care

Springfield Hospital is a full service not-for-profit hospital serving 16 towns in southeastern Vermont. Fully accredited by the JCAHO and Vermont Health Department its medical staff of over 40 physicians covers a wide range of specialties. Sophisticated diagnostic testing and surgical programs and a 24-hour fully staffed emergency department are offered.

Complementing traditional services Springfield has many alternative healthcare providers offering chiropractic, naturopathic, massage therapy, homeopathy and acupuncture therapies. Springfield Area Hospice and Visiting Nurse Alliance of NH-VT round out a continuum of care.
